Mandate

Context:

The SPS fire and safety equipment and standards date from the installation of the SPS, which, this year is in its 40th year of operation. Following the completion of the recent SPS fire safety study it is clear that significant modifications to the fire safety systems are needed to bring the SPS up to modern standards. This includes compartmentalization of the tunnel, upgrades to the automatic fire detection and protection system and improvements to the automatic and manual fire-fighting systems.

The SPS fire safety upgrade is considered as a priority for the Organization and sufficient funds have been made available in the MTP approved by Council in June 2016 to allow the major work to be completed by the end of LS2. As a result it is now necessary to set up a formalized project to take responsibility for the completion of the work.

Mandate:

The SPS Fire Safety Project will be responsible for the project management (WBS, technical co- ordination and integration, manpower and budget agreement with the departments concerned as well as budget and timescale control). The executive role for manpower and budget remains with the technical group in the departments. The project leader of the SPS Fire Safety Project will be Ronny Billen who will report on a regular basis to the Director of Accelerators and Technology.
